After living in Japan for four years, I started getting bored with the same ordinary lifestyle, specifically the nightlife scene here. It was like being stuck in a rut, a stale routine of the same bars, the same clubs, the same all-you-can-drink that slowly became a fuzzy jumble. I wanted to bring life back into my nightlife and googled in search of tips and recommendations but found that a lot of the websites say the same places. What I needed was something different and unique, maybe independently owned, and not ridiculously priced (because Tokyo is home to some of the world’s top bars).
This is when I started bar hopping in pursuit of unique, fun bars around Tokyo. Eventually, the list started growing. And soon after that, my friends who would also fall into a nightlife rut came to me for advice. I came to a realisation that there are quite a few others who are having similar issues in Tokyo. People who’s lived in Japan for a while and want to immerse in local watering holes, that’s not izakayas, drinking alleys, or the typical salary-men spots.
With that in mind, I thought that my listing could act as a guide for those looking for similar experiences and that I could also help people find places that suits their preference. Which is why Fl!p Guide has the filters to tailor suggestions so it’s easier to find what you’re looking for.
Another thing that I noticed is that Japan is a country where it’s hard to meet people organically. Friends from uni, from work, and share houses are easy to make and you’re lucky if you’ve been put in place to find your crew but speaking to other foreigners, it sounded like hard work for them to settle in and meet new people. That’s why I hope that Fl!p Guide can also act as a social platform to meet others or “partners in crime” who have similar tastes and just looking for people to go out and have fun. It’s sometimes hard to meet people to go out with, whether you’ve just moved to Tokyo or just travelling through. So I hope you guys find Fl!p Guide helpful and if you have any recommendations or requests, we’re always happy to hear feedback!
Using the Fl!p Guide Website/App
When you first sign up, you’ll go through the process of choosing your filters which essentially is asking about what your interests are, what you like, what do you look for when going out. You can always go into settings and change your Filters. If you’re on the app, at any point when you want to change your filters, just click the Settings icon located at the bottom-right corner under “You”. Just click Reset Filters.
Through the Places page on the website or the Explore tab on the app, you can explore bars, clubs & dining spots irrelevant to your filter settings, play around with the filters and explore your options. It is easy to use and you can get down to as specific if you’d like! Under Pages on the website or the Explore tab on the app, you can explore our listing irrelevant to your filter settings. So if you want to find a place in a certain location or by genre, this can be done here.
Finding places near you
If you’re on the FLIP Guide app, you can take a quick look at what’s around you, by clicking the Fl!p Pin at the top-right corner of Explore page. This will lead you to a maps view of all of our spots around you. You can click on any of the spots and see more details and find the discounts!
Go to the pages of the spots and at the top-right corner, there are several icons. By clicking one that looks like a price tag, a discount flyer will pop-up, showing you the detail of the discount, whether it’s a free shot, free drink, free entrance etc. When you visit that particular place, just show the screen to the staff and you will be able to redeem the discount!
Linking up with others
Under the Community page on the website or the Community tab in the app, this is where everything social can be found. Filters can be used here to find others with the same tastes as you. Check out people’s shout outs, find out what they are looking for and if your interests match, message them and see if they are keen to hit the town together!
Under the Feed in the Community tab in the app, you can post status, make plans, check in and let your partners in crime that you have connected with join you on adventures around town!
You can create lists with each spots, plan your night and categorise them however you like using this tool. Every spot has an icon just like a bullet-point list. You can review your lists under Settings in the You tab and if you want to edit your list, you can do that directly from the list within the pages of any spot.
